CLOSEOUT.COM DOMAIN HAS STRONG SALES FROM DAY ONE DUE TO DOMAIN'S UNKNOWN POPULARITY
Small business has sales take off when it starts using catchy domain name.
Los Angeles, California – Closeout.com opened its web site on November 1, 2004 expecting to have a long drive-up to profitability. The owners quickly discovered that the days of a big domain name meaning success were not so long gone. Closeout.com had close to $10,000 in ‘background traffic’ sales in its first 30 days. The traffic was mostly from people who just typed the domain name into their browsers to see what it brought up.
A few years ago, it was not uncommon for a domain such as closeout.com to fetch a sale price in the hundreds of thousands, sometimes even millions. Owner Ben Neydavood bought the domain in 1997 on a whim and left it sitting unused for years, unaware of its hidden potential.
Ben said, “We had no idea that this domain was getting so much traffic. I decided to develop the domain around a year ago to offer good deals I found on marked down products. As soon as the site went life we got sales – I hadn’t even told my family it was active.”
Now that Mr. Neydavood has started actually promoting the site, sales are way up and the site is already profitable. Ben spends his time online and off finding products that are selling for steeply reduced prices. He then posts them on closeout.com. So far his customers are very happy.
“The deals we’re listing are some of the best around, and all the better that it didn’t take much promotion for people to find us,” Ben added. “We’re excited for what 2005 has in store for us.”
